STNYC: Visit
NYU Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music
On January 25th, a group of Sound Thinkers visited NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music for a tour of their facilities in downtown Manhattan and an information session on their program and admissions process.
The school is on the brink of moving to a brand new location in Brooklyn, so Administrative Coordinator Alan Watson was sure to show guests some iconic sights from their current headquarters. This included a wall of Polaroids featuring faculty members, current and past students, and collaborators of the Institute. Names like Questlove, Robert Glasper, Maggie Rogers, and many others, stood out.
In the final portion of the visit, Sound Thinkers sat with Alan Watson in one of the studios and primary classrooms of the Institute, which happened to be the same place where Pharrell first listened to Maggie Rogers’ “Alaska” and a viral video came into existence. Sound Thinkers learned about the Institute’s undergraduate program, including its unique mission among music schools to provide professional leadership training for aspiring creative music entrepreneurs.
The opportunity to visit the school in its new location in Brooklyn is certainly in the cards for Sound Thinkers going forward.
Read Jaida Brown’s thoughts on the visit:
Some of the Sound Thinking crew and I went to the NYU Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music to learn about what the school offers their students, what the school teaches their students and the successes their students gained in the music industry.
The tour was led by Alan Watson; he is a representative for the school. He shared how some high-end celebrities visit the school to work on projects and guest teach. He gave some advice on how artists and students can build their social media handles for more attention. He also explained how music theory is connected to today’s hits that we listen to. The program is very interesting to me because they send students to a different country after they've finished certain projects to engage in a different music experience which I feel is very amazing and necessary! it sounds like your resume has to be up to par if you want to get into that institute though (No joke).
